Here is some of the goings-on in the world of drink this week.

  • The Wall Street Journal offers this collection of five Oscar inspired cocktails created by bartenders both far and near.  I particularly like the Starry Night by Hal Wolin of New York’s El Cobre: Chambord, St. Germain and Champagne.  It’s a red carpet in a glass.
  • Cocktail master Cameron Bogue, known for doing amazing things alongside Daniel Boulud, now will also be managing the beverage program for Earls Restaurrants.
  • Pocket Cocktails launched a new app for Mac computers this week that aims to school the home bartender. It is designed, they say, to be more than just a list of recipes and have included training material in mixology skills.  Check it out and let us know what you think.
  • Bartender Micah Dew offers the El Niño Mojito.  Lime, hot red pepper, basil, rum and ginger beer.  I loved this cocktail so much it became the first cocktail not on our site that we list on our cocktail recipe page.
  • A great cocktail name: Corn ‘n Oil.  With great ingredients: falernum and black strap rum.  Sounds like a long day after but I’m willing to find out.
  • While it’s 21 degrees out, the Maine Sunday Telegram offers a profile of Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. If you are unfamiliar with Jeff, he is the author of five books on vintage tiki cocktails and cuisine and serves on the advisory board of the Museum of the American Cocktail.  He’s a real dude who knows his cocktails.
  • Great piece from the Los Angeles Times demonstrating how women are carving their niche in the craft cocktail movement.
  • Columnist Peter Hitchens at the Daily Mail thinks that drink is the reason for all that is wrong with the world.  With the U.K. at least.  It’s an interesting rant though.
  • Back to Washington, this time the Post, for an interesting piece on homemade G&T’s in Spain.
